Dermatologists' Tips to Reduce the Signs of Aging

Getting better results from your anti-aging products can be as easy as following simple tips from dermatologists.

"People often think that the more expensive a product is, the more effective it will be," said board-certified dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, founding director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York City. "That's not always the case. People need to shop smart since there are some very effective, affordable products in the skin care aisles of their local stores."

To get the most from age-fighting products, Dr. Taylor recommends people also follow these tips:

1. Wear sunscreen every day since the sun's rays can accelerate signs of aging. Use a sunscreen or facial moisturizer that offers broad-spectrum protection and has an SPF of at least 30. Be sure to apply sunscreen to all skin that is not covered by clothing.
2. Do not tan. Getting a tan from the sun or a tanning bed exposes you to harmful UV rays that can accelerate aging, causing wrinkles, age spots, a blotchy complexion and even skin cancer.
3. Moisturize. Moisturizing traps water in the skin, which can help reduce the appearance of some fine lines and make your complexion look brighter and younger.
4. Test products, even those labeled "hypoallergenic." To test, dab a small amount of the product on your inner forearm twice a day for four to five days. If you do not have a reaction, it is likely safe for you to apply to your face.
5. Use the product as directed. Active ingredients can do more harm than good when too much is used. Applying more than directed can cause clogged pores, a blotchy complexion, or other unwanted effects.
6. Stop using products that sting or burn unless prescribed by a dermatologist. Irritating the skin makes signs of aging more noticeable.

Some products prescribed by a dermatologist may cause stinging or burning. When under a dermatologist's care, this can be safe and effective.

7. Limit the number of products. Using too many products on your skin, especially more than one anti-aging product, tends to irritate the skin. This often makes signs of aging more noticeable.

"It's very important that people allow time for the product to work. While a moisturizer can immediately plump up fine lines, most products take at least six weeks to work and sometimes it can take three months," said Dr. Taylor. "See a dermatologist if after following these tips you still do not see the expected results," said Dr. Taylor.

These steps are demonstrated in "Wrinkle Remedies," a video posted to the Academy website and the Academy's YouTube channel. This video is part of the Dermatology A to Z: Video Series, which offers relatable videos that demonstrate tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails. A new video in the series will be posted to the Academy website and the YouTube channel each month.

Glycerine is one of the best remedies for natural skin care. It one of the best natural moisturisers that one can use to their benefit. It is used for both cosmetic purposes and in some medicines that are used for treating several skin conditions. But it is always better to use glycerine in a diluted form on skin or else it might cause harm. Glycerine And Honey- Take 1tbsp of honey and 1tbsp of glycerine. Mix well and apply all over your face and neck. Glycerine is ideal for skin care this way. Wash off your skin after 15-20 minutes and you will find yourself left with beautifully hydrated and glowing skin.

You may put all these skin care tips in your skin care regime for healthy skin. Apply these natural face masks only once or twice a week and not more than that.

The beauty rules you should know

There are some beauty rules that are obvious. Don't go out into the sun without sunblock is one. Quit smoking is another. Here are some less obvious rules - but no less important - tips.

PERFECT IMPERFECT

Perfect skin is about genetics not genius skincare. Unless you are genetically blessed, your skin won't be perfect even if you can afford the stratospherically expensive cream that claims to be able to make it so.

Do what you can to protect your skin from the elements, establish a regular skincare programme that fits your budget and investigate ways of treating serious skin conditions if they arise. How well you age is two parts care, one part character.

DON'T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES

Beauty is big business. A huge amount of money is invested in finding "miracle" skincare ingredients.

But - just as there is no cure for ageing - there's no one uber ingredient that's better than all the others. Good skincare is made up of a cocktail of antioxidants and ingredients that mimic the skin's own repair processes and encourage cells to work more efficiently.

GET GOOD ADVICE

Consult a dermatologist or cosmetic physician if you have a problem such as acne or dermatitis. A little spending now could save you a lot of future scarring. To find a good cosmetic physician, visit the website of the New Zealand College of Appearance Medicine.

EAT UP

It makes sense. The skin is the body's biggest organ, so what we eat will be reflected in our appearance. Our internal health shows up in our skin, agrees Dr Geoffrey Heber, CEO of Ultraceuticals, the Australian skincare company that also sells vitamin supplements alongside its moisturisers and cleansers.

But you can't just eat poorly and make up for it by popping a vitamin or two. 'A vitamin such as vitamin C - which is proven to be beneficial to the skin - is 40 times more effective applied topically than when it's ingested,' he says. The main reason is other organs take preference over any nutrients, and your skin gets what's left over. Take supplements, but not at the expense of good skincare.

DON'T SUFFER

Scars, sticky-out-ears, wonky teeth . . . cosmetic medical science has advanced so much in the past 10 years that natural-looking solutions to bad teeth, cauliflower ears and acne pits are infinitely possible. Stubby lashes can be completely cured by the drug Latisse; pigmentation can be minimised by a range of options, including hi-tech lasers. Change what causes you pain.
Ad Feedback

ALWAYS WEAR A MOISTURISER

As we age, our cell membranes break down and water loss across the epidermis is increased. The result? Wrinkles. It's one of the reasons why so much emphasis is put on moisturisers' anti-ageing properties. Second only to sunblock, it's a very important beauty investment.

BEWARE INFLAMMATION

The beauty world has really woken up to the dangers of inflammation. The signs - redness, itching, ultra dryness, patchiness - are sure markers of free-radical damage. And damage means more wrinkles, dullness, uneven pigmentation. One of the biggest issues with inflammation, however, is that it's insidious, often doing its damage beneath the skin's surface, where it can't be seen.

Avoid it as much as possible by seeking out skincare specifically designed to soothe inflammation and, if your skin has a tendency to sensitivity, avoid products containing potential irritants (alcohol, menthol, peppermint, citrus and fragrance, for example).

PEEL APPEAL

One of the ways of refreshing your skin is to use a salon or at-home face peel. Basically uber-exfoliants, peels use chemicals to slough off dead skin cells, hence making the complexion look younger and brighter.

The advantages of salon or at-home peels - which generally employ varying percentages of glycolic acid - include smoothing out dry patches, lightening dark sunspots, reducing wrinkles and evening out acne scars.

Tips for greening your skin and hair care regimen

Regardless of how you’ve come by this information, there’s a major change happening in products for your skin and hair care regimen in reaction to growing consumer demand for products with fewer or no toxic substances. Health-conscious folks are looking for ways to cut the load of toxins that enter their bodies, and environmentalists are increasingly pointing at what they call “non-point sources” of pollution to our waterways. Unlike, say, a factory dumping waste into a river (which is a “point source,” a growing part of the chemicals that make their way into our waterways are coming from our very own homes — working their way into the fish and other animals that share our ecosystem with us. And plenty of people are erring on the side of caution: The truth is that most chemicals in our personal care products are on the FDA’s GRAS list (generally recognized as safe), which means that they haven’t necessarily been tested for safety — just that they haven’t been proven to cause health problems yet.

So now that you have the curiosity and the motivation, here’s how you can green your skin and hair care regimen.

Don’t try to do it all at once: We all have products we love and depend on, and the best way to stick with less-toxic versions of those products is to find a replacement that really works for you. The good news is that unlike old natural products, new formulations work just as well as chemically laden ones.

Choose two or three products to replace first. These should be the ones that you use the most often; usually, your body soap, hand soap, shampoo and moisturizer are the most regularly used products. After you have replaced those, move on to things you use less often, like face masks, shaving creams and hair treatments.

Do some research: With your favorite old products in hand, check out the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. You can enter the products’ names and find out how toxic they really are. The site provides a simple 1-10 rating system (with the higher number being most toxic). Sometimes what you are already using might score low on the toxicity scale, which might mean that you want to keep it around.

You will probably find that some or all of your existing products contain chemicals that are linked with health issues or negative health consequences (you can dig deep into the research on Skin Deep and see the chemicals' effects). This is where you have to make a decision for yourself, based on your life: Are some mildly toxic chemicals OK? Are you looking for completely chemical-free products? The Cosmetics Safety Database will explain the various levels and their potential impacts.

Start shopping: If you have a good local health food store or Whole Foods (which independently evaluates its bath and body products) near you, they are a great place to start. The experts there can help guide you to what’s popular, what works, and which products are the most natural and organic. Not all natural or organic products are completely chemical-free, so be sure to do your homework, even on products from health food stores. You can also find some natural brands at retailers like Target and Wal-Mart.

Huda Kattan Reveals Top Skincare Tips for Ramadan

Ramadan could take a toll on your skin, think weary-looking dehydrated skin! Help is at hand from Vaseline ambassador Huda Kattan. The lady behind the Huda Beauty blog is sharing her top tips to keeping your skin hydrated and your face looking fresh. Go on and try them out!

1. Opt for a Blemish Balm Cream
Not only will it keep your skin looking clear, but most of them are actually good for you. I always look for one with an SPF as well as one that can brighten and protect the skin! They are like a tinted moisturiser with added benefits.

2. Mineralise as much as possible
I try to only use mineral makeup during Ramadan. Not only is it light, but it is free of any harmful chemicals, which means your skin will be able to breathe. You will look gorgeous and your face will love you! MAC has some great mineral makeup and the colour selection is great!

3. Use products that are good for you
The last thing you need during months when makeup should be minimal and light is products that are bad for you. I love using primers and mascaras that have vitamins since they can actually make your lashes thicker! I can't live without my Dior Show Primer, my lashes have not only multiplied, but they are longer and thicker from using it.

4. Trade in your lipstick for butters
Our lips tend to get dry super very fast during the month of Ramadan! Of course wearing bright or glossy lips is a big no no. I like to use Vaseline Petroleum Jelly mixed with home ingredients under nude lipsticks or tinted lip balms since they keep your lips hydrated, but also add a hint of healthy colour to your face. My absolute favourite lip tints are the Rouge Coco Shine from Chanel. The colours are light and it feels amazing on!

5. Go easy on the eyes
This month try to keep your eye makeup light! You can always skip the liner all together and use shadows instead since they are really light. One thing I like to do is use a shadow on the outer corner only and in a small amount, this will give you a little life without being too obvious.

6. Keep your skin hydrated
Water goes first to your organs and your skin gets jipped in the process. I always keep a bottle of Vaseline Total Moisture Cocoa Glow handy. Use it right when you leave the shower and it will not only seal in moisture, but add that extra bit of hydration which our skin needs during this month!

7. Drink super hydrating liquids
I always opt for things like coconut water (natural, no sugar added) after iftar since it can help replenish the skin's moisture which is lost during the day when we can't drink water. It won't get rid of your thirst, but it will help your skin a lot.

8. Deal with skin disorders or naturally dry skin
One of the best things you can do is apply Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to your skin before bed time, especially to those dry areas like elbows & knees. Simply apply it overnight and wash off lightly in the morning or wipe with a wash cloth with lukewarm water.

9. Load up on antioxidants
Try loading up on berries when you can since they are super strong in antioxidants. I love goji berries and try to drink acai juice as much as possible. You only need 1 fl oz per day and even with the fasting, your skin will have a healthy glow.

10. Remember to go natural
Try to use as many natural face masks this month. These products are light on the skin, but very effective! One of my favourite things to do is use yoghurt and honey and apply it to my skin for 15 minutes before rinsing. It will help balance skin oils and repair your skin’s health.

7 Summer Skin Mistakes

Bug bites, sunburns, peeling skin—summer means a whole host of different skin hang ups than we're used to combatting in cooler temps.
By now you probably know some of the basics, like that you need to protect your skin from that scorching sun, but many people are still falling into some common skin care traps.

Below are some of the most frequently-made summertime skin mistakes—and easy solutions. Then tell us in the comments: What's your biggest summer skin complaint?

No sunscreen
1. Not Wearing Sunscreen

The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers in the U.S. are linked to sun exposure, and yet many of us still are not protecting ourselves. In fact, 49 percent of men and 29 percent of women say they have not used sunscreen in the past 12 months, according to a recent survey from The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Part of the reason why is that there's simple confusion as to what works and for how long. Only 32 percent of men said they considered themselves extremely or very knowledgeable about how to get adequate sun protection, according to the survey.

But anything is better than nothing. "Honestly, the best sunscreen is whatever the patient uses," Dr. Bobby Buka, a dermatologist in private practice in New York City, told HuffPost in May. "I'm not going to fight the battle about formulation."

2. Applying Sunscreen Incorrectly

Even among sunscreen loyalists, there's confusion as to how much sunscreen you really need and how often you should reapply. More than 60 percent of men said they believed one application would protect them for at least four hours, according to the same Skin Cancer Foundation survey.

In reality, most sunscreens should be reapplied every two hours, and more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.

During each application, make sure to use enough sunscreen to "generously coat" any skin that won't be covered by clothes, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends. Generally, that will be about an ounce of sunscreen, or enough to fill a shot glass, although you may need more depending on body size. One study found that most people use less than half that amount.

3. Not Wearing Sunglasses

If you're not protecting your peepers when you're in the sun (and 27 percent of U.S. adults say they never do, according to a report from trade group The Vision Council), you're exposing yourself to a greater risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancer on the eyelids, which accounts for up to 10 percent of all skin cancers.

It's also important to throw on the right pair. Those cheap ones you picked up may not meet recommendations for UV ray protection. Look for a pair that blocks at least 99 percent of UVA and UVB rays, Men's Health reported, although that can be tricky because stores may label products incorrectly. Your best bet is to bring your sunglasses to an eye doctor, who can scan the lenses to measure how much protection they offer.

Wearing sunglasses can also help minimize wrinkles and fine lines caused by squinting.

4. Taking a Dive After Shaving

If you want to look smooth before lounging poolside, take note that going in the water right after shaving, waxing or undergoing laser hair removal can cause irritation to that extra-sensitive skin, according to Glamour.com. Try to finish up the beauty routine at least a few hours before it's time to make a splash.

5. Not Staying Hydrated

Feeling parched from the summer heat? Your skin may be too! Sun exposure saps moisture from skin, which can leave you looking flaky and scaly, Daily Glow explains.

Richer lotions and moisturizers are a good start, but part of the problem is you're likely not moisturizing from the inside out. Drinking more water can help, as can other hydrating sips, like coconut water, and Aeating foods with high water content, like watermelon and cucumbers.

6. Neglecting Your Feet

Spending a lot of time in flip-flops can cause the skin around the heel to crack. Moisturizing daily can help, as can a weekly date with the pumice stone. If you're not too hot, Glamour.com recommends sleeping in socks. The fabric can help your moisturizer soak in.

7. Scratching at Bug Bites

We know that itch can feel like torture, but scratching itchy summer bug bites is a bad idea, Dr. Neal B. Schultz, a board-certified dermatologist in practice in New York City, told HuffPost in June. You're likely to break the skin more by scratching, which can expose the bite to infection. And scratching will only make bites more inflamed, he said, leading to greater itchiness and pain.

Skin Care Tips For Working Women

Working women seldom find out time to care for themselves. In such busy schedules, it becomes very difficult to look after their skin. This is why, early ageing, tanning and dark spots are common skin problems of working women. If you are a working lady and do not have much time to care for your skin, try these easy beauty tips that can be easily followed even in busy schedules.

Sunscreens: Many working women have to work outdoors and protecting their skin from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun is very important. If you think that sunscreens are only for sportspersons and people who are always out in the sun, then think again. Sunscreens form a protective layer on the skin that prevents ageing and tanning. Always apply a sunscreen on your face and arms (all exposed skin) 30 minutes before stepping out in the bright sun.

Moisturise skin: Working women would not have to spend much time on following this and it is one easy tip to care for your skin. Moisturise your skin regularly to keep it soft and shiny. To get rid of dry, freckled and wrinkled skin, always use a moisturiser. After a shower, apply a cream or moisturizer that leaves the skin soft, nourished and shiny. If you apply makeup, coat the skin with moisturizer before applying makeup to retain the moisture in the skin.

Cleanse: Always indulge in cleansing your skin. Even after a hectic day, working women should always follow this tip to care for their skin. Cleansing takes out all the dead skin cells, rejuvenates skin and opens clogged pores. Many women believe that washing their face with a face wash or soapy solution 4-5 times a day cleanses the skin. Well, washing the face with face wash only cleans the dirt and pollutants that stick to the skin. Moreover, excessive usage of face wash can damage the sensitive skin cells and tissues. This can cause cracks, lines on the skin and also make it rough. Face washes take away all the moisture from the skin. Limit the use of face wash and go for cleansing solutions like cleansing milk. Deep cleansing is required to have a clear and flawless skin.

Water: Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Water protects the skin and hair. Working women often have an unhealthy lifestyle and this affects their skin and hair. To maintain a glowing and nourished skin and hair, this is an effective beauty tip for working women. Have lots of water as it helps flush out toxins from the body.

Diet: Take out some time for your health. Working women should know that they can only work if they have the energy inside their body. Unhealthy diet can never keep them healthy and active. Include fresh green vegetables and fruits to stay fit and have a glowing skin.

Are you a working woman? How do you care for your skin?

Skin Care Before Bed

Sleep is a restorative and regenerative process. It is the only time at night that all our body muscles are put to rest. Do your skin a great favour by attending to a proper skin care process. If you want a thoroughly clean and revitalized skin at the time you wake up, you must take to a regular skin care regimen before you go to sleep. Only a good nights sleep isn't good enough for a healthy skin. Here are a few methods to attend to your skin before you hit the bed.

Cleanse- If you want to get good skin, it is very important to take off the makeup after a day's work. All makeup cosmetics contain chemicals and it is not at all a healthy practice to sleep on with it. Get a good oil free cleanser and cleanse your face and neck properly with it. This is one of those basic skincare methods that you should follow regularly before you go to bed.

Wash- Wash off your face with a soap-free face wash and make it a part of daily skin care regime. Massage the face wash gently on your skin for 1-2 minutes. Do not allow it to stay for long or else you will end up losing all the moisture from skin. This will open up all the skin pores and cleanse your facial skin from within.

Hydrate- You need to hydrate your face properly. Take some cream and a few drops of water in your hand. Mix them well and massage your face with it. This cream massage will moisturize all your facial skin cells and keeps it hydrated all through the night.

Drink Water- Only external skin care treatments will do you no good if you do not eat or drink healthy. Most of the times, you have a dry skin or get acne due to improper bowel movement. So drink at least 1-2 glasses of water everyday before bed. This will flush off all harmful toxins out of the body and will keep it healthy from within. If you want to get good skin, then drink water before you go to bed at night.

Check Your Bed- Many a times you develop skin rashes or infections due to some dirt or germs in the pillow or bed cover. So, it's very important to change the pillow or bed cover after a few alternative days. Instead of the traditional ones switch to silk or satin pillow and bed covers. This is so because, the fabric is soft and gentle. So, it will not put any extra stress on your skin.

Follow all of them regularly and wake up each morning to say 'good morning' to a healthy and beautiful skin.

Skincare tips for athletes

It doesn't matter whether your sporting prowess is up to the Olympic standard or not, if you fail to look after your body then your exercise routine could be damaging your skin.

With all that sweating and a higher possibility of chafing and irritation, it's essential that you consider your skin when undertaking exercise.

Here are some ways you can ensure your skin looks as healthy as you feel after exercise.

Protect against chlorine

Swimming can be very damaging to skin as chlorine can dehydrate it, causing skin to be dry and feel tight.

It's essential to wash thoroughly before and after swimming to reduce chlorine damage. If you're a frequent swimmer then it could be beneficial to exfoliate gently at least twice a week to remove any build up.

Ensure your towel and costumes are cleaned after each use, as chlorine can irritate the skin and cause rashes to form.

An emollient or highly hydrating body moisturiser such as the Balance Me Natural Protection Daily Moisturiser is hugely beneficial to regular swimmers. With its light and gentle formula, it doesn't clog up your pores and also protects against UV damage with its SPF 18 rating.

This is particularly useful if you spend a lot of time on holiday in the pool and want a base for your sunscreen.

Consider your underarms
Frequent sport and exercising means you're likely to be reapplying deodorant more often.

Deodorant can contain strong chemicals and perfumes designed to prevent sweating and add fragrance. However, these can dry out the skin, exacerbating eczema and causing irritation.

Using a product designed for sensitive skin such as the Acorelle Skin Care Roll On Deodorant can help control perspiration, while moisturising the skin using hydrating aloe vera and rose water.

If you have particularly sensitive skin aim to avoid products with alcohol in and consider moisturising under your arms before bed each night to help the skin recover.
Give your skin time to breathe

Swimming costumes, sports bras, leggings, etc are all tight-fitting and restrictive to the skin. This is important for performance and protection, but can cause the skin to become hot and sweaty, blocking pores and leading to a build up in bacteria.

To prevent skin from suffering, always wash straight after exercising and reduce the amount of time skin is kept covered when possible.

Wearing cotton socks and specially designed sports trainers will help air to circulate, while wearing sports sandals and removing shoes and socks during breaks will eliminate the risk of athlete's foot and bacteria build up.

Stay hydrated

One of the most important rules for athletes is to remain hydrated.

Not only does this help replace the water lost from sweat but it improves bodily function and performance, while also regulating temperature.

Water is essential for healthy, radiant looking skin as it flushes the toxins out of your body, helping it to stay clean and smooth.

4 Tips For Banishing Morning "Puffy Face"

If you've been waking up in the morning with puffy, watery eyes and dark circles due to allergies — or any other reason, for that matter — don't stress. A few simple tweaks to your morning routine can start your day off right. Esthetician Liv Contreras of San Francisco's Lashfully lash extension salon has easy tips for preventing and treating the dreaded morning puffy eye and face. Of course, see your doctor when needed, but to see Liv's expert skin care advice, just keep reading.

Check your bed: Do you have feathery pillows or bedspread? If so, you might want to consider switching up your bedding, as the feathers could actually be what's making you bleary-eyed in the morning.
Don't wash your face in the shower: Sounds strange, right? Instead, Liv recommends that you wash your face with cool water at your bathroom sink to quell the swell.
Pack it on: Eye masks and cool packs are great ways to provide some relief, all while reducing the puffiness.
For a DIY option: For another way to take down swelling, Liv suggests applying a cut piece of smooth fruit over your eyes, holding the fruit in place with a facial tissue.

Thus, here are few simple recipes to make face powder at home.

Homemade face powder recipes:

Mix ½tbsp cornstarch with 1tsp baby powder in a bowl. Cornstarch is a thick powder that lasts longer on the face. Baby powder and cornstarch makes a soft mix that is best for the skin. Apply a little on your face to feel fresh. You can add few drops of an aromatic essence if you want to make the powder smell good.
In a bowl, mix 1tsp green clay powder with 1tbsp cornstarch. Green clay is mostly used in making face packs. You can use it to make homemade face powder too! When mixed with cornstarch, green clay hides dark spots from the skin and opens the skin pores. You can either apply with a makeup puff or a brush to look fresh any time of the day.
Take 1tsp beetroot powder, 1/2tsp mica and 2 ounces arrowroot powder. Mix them together. Now slowly add 5-8 drops of lavender essential oil (one drop at a time based on your requirement). Also add the powders in little quantities to suit your skin tone. Apply the homemade powder on your face and check if it is matching with your skin tone or not. Add more amount of these ingredients if required.
If you want to make a foundation powder at home, do not go for harsh chemical products. Just mix cornstarch with cocoa powder. While adding cocoa powder, see that the powder matches with your skin tone. Slowly add a little amount and mix. If required, add more in the bowl. Mix well so that no lumps are formed. Store it in a box and use whenever required. This mineral powder gives a better effect of a foundation than the others because of the cocoa powder.
One of the easiest ways to make a natural foundation is to apply non-scented baby powder on the face. Just take the powder in your palms and then press it on your skin. Baby powder sets on the face and absorbs moisture. Thus the skin looks fresh and dry. This is an ideal face powder to beat the summer heat. You can also mix the non-scented baby powder with a compact. If you have a broken cake of a compact or foundation powder, just crush it finely and mix with the baby powder.

Causes Of Dark Eye Circles

Are you worried about fighting your dark under-eye circles? Before you do so, you must first know the causes behind dark circles. Many a times you must have wondered about the cause of the dark eye circles in spite of abundant sleep. Sleep may be just one of the causes for dark circles. Dark circles only make you look exhausted, dull, boring and unattractive. So, get to these causes behind dark circles and try to avoid them as much as possible.

Makeup- If you have sensitive skin and are prone to allergies then that might be a cause for your dark eye circles. The skin under your eyes is the most supple and hence, it is affected first. Any eye makeup that you use might be responsible for your dark circles. So, always use hypo-allergic cosmetics that will not cause any harm to your skin.

Diseases- Anaemia or improper kidney function might also cause your dark circles. So if you are anaemic or suffer from improper kidney function consult a doctor and get medicines. This will not only cure the respective diseases but also reduce your black under-eye rings.

Fatigue And Sleep- Excessive work pressure may put extra stress on you both physically and mentally. This gets reflected in your eyes and you develop black under eye rings. Also lack of sleep or excessive sleep leads to dark eye circles. You should never sleep on your stomach as it puts pressure on the facial skin and eyes. The under eye region being the most tender part of all facial skin starts getting affected first.

Dehydration- Dehydration is also one of the causes for dark circles. Less fluid intake would lead to improper blood circulation in the body. This significantly affects the blood vessels under the eyes and you develop dark eye circles. So drink lots of water and stay hydrated the whole day.

Pigmentation- Exposure to sun shoots up the melanin formation in our skin. This skin colouring agent is to be found more in people with dark skin complexion. This causes dark skin patches under the eyes. So wear sunglasses or use an effective sun block before you step out in the sun next time.

Unhealthy Lifestyle- Smoking, drinking or excessive night outs may lead to dark circles under the eyes. Such excesses cause blood vessel dilation. As the skin under the eyes is thinner than any other part of the body, it swells and dark patches are formed on it.

Try to stay away from all these factors if you do not want to develop black under eye rings. Look all the more beautiful with flawless skin and no dark patches to spoil it.

Rachel Bilson’s Skincare Secrets: Top Tips From Her Dermatologist

The starlet has an amazingly clear complexion that is so enviable! Now you can learn how she gets it that way straight from the source–her dermatologist!

Rachel Bilson, 30, regularly turns to Debra Jaliman, M.D. board-certified dermatologist and author of the new book Skin Rules to keep her skin flawless.

Here, Dr. Jaliman shares her top tips for complexion perfection:

TIP #1: REMOVE MAKEUP BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP “I cannot emphasize this enough: Never go to bed without cleansing your face. If you don’t, the results will be clogged pores and breakouts. If you’re really too exhausted to wash your face with water and cleanser, at least have cleansing pads by your bed and use them to wipe makeup off,” says Dr. Jaliman.

TIP #2: EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE: “Even the best skin in the world will look dull if it is not well exfoliated. You can exfoliate on a daily basis with your cotton washcloth or a disposable cotton pad and a cleanser. If you have normal or oily skin, in addition to your daily exfoliation, once or twice a week use something stronger, like a scrub with fine granules or microspheres,” advises Dr. Jaliman.

TIP #3: THE WRONG MAKEUP CAN MAKE ACNE WORSE: “People with acne cannot use heavy foundations and oily concealers, period. I’ve had several celebrity clients whose acne did not clear up until I personally spoke to their makeup artists—all that heavy TV makeup was ruining my carefully prescribed skincare regimen. Every major makeup company now makes oil-free and non-comedogenic foundations. People with very oily skin can use mineral foundations, which keep skin matte longer,” advises Dr. Jaliman.

TIP #4: DON’T WAIT UNTIL WRINKLES APPEAR TO START USING ANTIAGING PRODUCTS: “Collagen production starts decreasing in the late twenties, so that’s when people should start using retinols, antioxidants and collagen boosters, especially around the eyes,” says Jaliman.

TIP #5: STORE YOUR MAKEUP AND SKINCARE PRODUCTS IN THE FRIDGE: “The warm, steamy environment of the bathroom makes products deteriorate faster. If you have very expensive creams or have bought several jars of lipsticks that you don’t use every day, keep them in the fridge for best results,” recommends Dr. Jaliman.

European skincare market seeing rapid growth

The European skincare market is witnessing a rise in demand for professional treatments.

New figures show that there has been a four per cent growth in professional skincare treatment sales since 2011, as it begins to near pre-recessionary peak levels.

Consumers are returning to salons and spas for treatments, according to market analyst Kline & Company, with many keen on finding the best skincare advice, Professional Beauty reports.

Skincare product sales through these venues represent almost 60 per cent of the market in Europe, rising 3.7 per cent over the past year.

Spas and salons are stimulating a higher number of sales of skincare products, the research suggests, as brands look to attract customers through social media sites and mobile devices, many of which have handy apps to give tips and ideas.

More interactive skincare companies were found to have performed best as they could better engage with their customers, meaning they get improved treatments with the clearest information and product background.

This means you needn't worry what ingredients are in your products, as, with clearer websites, businesses are becoming more open and keener to share when they're using better oils and natural components.

Strong gains were found for 2011, particularly for brands which used multiple different venues to sell their products through, allowing more people to see the product in action and hear great reviews.

An increase in demand for skincare products has been reported in Europe, however elsewhere growth has been even higher.

In China and South Korea the skincare industry has grown by 9.3 per cent 9.5 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, US sales have witnessed a slight decline as spas look to concentrate on a few key brands.

A more knowledgeable public has meant that consumers are becoming more aware of what ingredients they are using on their skin, meaning these savvy-shoppers are keen to buy their own products, rather than always taking salon recommendations.ADNFCR-2389-ID-801413763-ADNFCR

Summer beauty is no sweat with these skincare tips

If the intense heat and humidity blanketing much of the country finds you looking shiny and feeling frazzled, a few tips for looking fresh and stylish should have you chilling in no time.

“Simple styling in the summer heat is always best…Hair pulled back and clean makeup are timeless and fuss-free,” says fashion designer Joeffer Caoc, who also recommends wearing dresses and separates made of easy-fitting, wrinkle-resistant knit fabrics such as mesh and jersey.

Cool, clean-looking makeup usually starts with a light-handed application and includes switching to lighter makeup and skin care products which won’t slide off with the heat and humidity.

Some products are designed to help control excessively shiny, oily skin which becomes more prevalent in hot weather.

“Summertime heat and humidity causes sebaceous glands to step up their oil production making that ‘shine-free’ look difficult to achieve. I tell my patients to modify their skin care routine, using oil free products and often omitting a daily moisturizer,” says Dr. Katie Rodan, a dermatologist based in Oakland, California, and a co-founder of the Proactiv skin care line.

“Using oil blotting sheets as needed during the day can lessen shine so they (patients) won’t be tempted to wash their face more than twice daily. Believe it or not, over-cleansing can result in greater oil production over time,” adds Rodan.

Using makeup primer and mattifying base products and switching to oil-free and gel-based makeup formulas can also help achieve a polished summer look, as can finishing one’s makeup application with a light dusting of bronzer or powder.

“To achieve a beautiful summer look on a hot humid day, use bronzing powder along the temples and cheekbones…across the bridge of the nose and on the apples of the cheeks for a natural sun-kissed healthy glow,” suggests Rebecca Restrepo, a global makeup artist for Elizabeth Arden.

Changing your lip, cheek and mascara products can also help maintain a long lasting, smudge-free appearance.

“To achieve long lasting, smudge and budge-free lip and cheek colour during extreme humidity, smooth The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Stain in Rose Pink or Bronze Glimmer onto your lips and cheeks,” suggests celebrity makeup artist Chase Aston, who is based in London, England.

Liquid lip colours, which combine the luster of gloss with the staying power of lipstick or lip stain, also provide long wearing colour.

Waterproof mascaras and eyeliners are good choices as they’re designed not to smear, but opting to wear false lashes offers a sure way to avoid mascara meltdown.

Finally, don’t forget to apply sunblock, and if you wear fragrance switch from heavily scented perfumes to lightly scented colognes and eau de toilettes during the warm weather, as fragrance tends to amplify in the heat.

“We change to lighter weight fashions and fabrics in the summer, and should do the same with our fragrance. Leave the heavier vanilla and spicy fragrances for the cold weather and wear fresh, clean, crisp and tart scents in the summer,” recommends Marian Bendeth, a global fragrance expert with Sixth Scents.

Skin care tips: How to minimize enlarged nose pores

Skin problems are common to most of us. These problems can be caused by factors such as environment, age, hormones or even the foods that we eat. Then there are the problems that are caused by heredity and that we are born to live with. Large pores are one of these problems.

The size of your pores are determined before you reach the age of being concerned about whether or not they are large or small. If your mother or father has large pores, you can thank them for this trait that was carried onto you. But not all is lost in having large pores. Yes, extra attention is needed to care for your skin in order to prevent break out, but there is a positive side to large pores. Having larger pores mean that you have a higher production of oil. This still doesn’t sound as good as you thought, but it is.
Acne care How to get rid of a simple pimple prevent it and keep it from spreading 145x300 Skin care tips: How to minimize enlarged nose pores

Skin care tips: How to minimize enlarged nose pores

A higher production of oil coming through the pores will cause them to enlarge. This will start to occur during puberty when the hormones are kicking in and you start to see changes in your complexion. Most of us noticed more oil over our nose, forehead and chin, but a few of us may have been oily on our cheeks. This process more than likely caused breakouts due to that oil production clogging the pores. The oil pools in the pores and eventually forms bacteria that cause acne. The extent of break out largely depended on how you cared for your skin or how your body reacted to the hormonal changes that were occurring at that time. There is a positive side to large pores.
Since having large pores mean more oil production, the skin is naturally more moisturized and less dry. Over time this natural oil will keep the skin more supple and less likely to line and wrinkle. You may not have appreciated it during your teen years or even early adulthood, but ask your grandmother or mother who has dewy, nearly wrinkle-free skin how important having oily skin was.

The challenges of keeping a face clean that has large pores can be difficult. You want your pores to be unclogged and free of blackheads, but you also don’t want to be dried out by the products to clean your oily skin with. There are ways to do this without stripping the skin of natural oils.

The most effective way to keep your face clean is to keep everyday bacteria away from the skin. A common way of spreading bacteria to the face is by touching it with the hands. Every dermatologist will tell you to keep the hands away from the face. Besides doing that and keeping other objects away from your face such as cell phones, a regular cleansing routine is a must.

The first step is a cleanser for oily skin. Choose a gel cleanser that is gentle enough not to strip the skin, but is effective in thoroughly cleaning the skin of surface oil, such as Mac’s Green Gel Cleanser. Using cleanser in the morning and again at night will keep the skin free of everyday grime and dirt that your skin comes in contact with and that could cause clogged pores and breakout.

Next step is a weekly scrub. Large pores tend to trap more bacteria than small pores, so they need extra cleansing in keeping away the blackheads. A scrub up to three times a week will exfoliate the top layers of dead skin in order to keep away the bacteria that settle in the large pores. Try a granulated scrub once or twice a week at first before going to three times, you don’t want to dry out your skin, which leads to other skin care dilemmas.

Finally using an oil control moisturizer will complete your skin care regimen. A lot of oily people cringe at the thought of putting more moisture on their skin, but oil- controlling lotions will help keep the oil from pooling in areas on the face. The job of the lotion is to disperse the oil evenly so you don’t look overly shiny. This will cause the pores on the face to appear smaller since there will be less oil in the pore. The reflection of the oil sitting in the pore makes the pore seem large therefore keeping the skin surface matte or dry will make the appearance of the pores smaller.

Using these simple skincare tips will help in making large pores seem smaller by controlling the oil on the surface of the skin. Heredity may have the upper hand in what size your pores are but you can definitely control their appearance with an effective skin care regime.

Summer Skincare Tips To Prevent Body Acne

Every season comes with a handful of embarrassing beauty woes that we all want to avoid. Winter comes with dry, flaky skin; the springtime can bring swollen, puffy eyes from the excess pollen; and summer has its own set of sweaty mishaps. One of these summertime beauty woes is the increase in body acne due to sweaty skin.

We focus on great skincare for our faces year round, but many of us just don’t know what to do when an unexpected bout of body acne makes its unsightly debut on our backs and chests. The summer means high temperatures and a lot of sun which is great in most aspects, except for that constant sweaty sheen over your skin that results in clogged pores and blemishes. Use these tips to prevent body acne from ruining your bare, bronzed skin looks:

Use Medicated Body Wash- There are plenty of drugstore options of cleansers and body washes that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Use these in the shower to clean your pores and prevent bacteria from causing breakouts. Neutrogena makes some great products for body acne like the Body Clear Body Wash which is made with salicylic acid. Another great Neutrogena product to look into is the Body Clear Body Spray which allows you to get the same body acne fighting benefits of a salicylic acid product without the shower.

Exfoliate and Moisturize- These are the two key words for most skincare solutions including body acne. Just like your face skincare routine, it is really beneficial to exfoliate your body once a week to slough off dead skin cells that clog your pores. Don’t go overboard on the exfoliation because it can result in irritated and dry skin that can also lead to body acne. Be sure to to moisturize for optimal skin health.

Shower After Sweaty Activities- Whether you just got back from the gym, went on a nice hike, or just spent a long day outside in high temperatures, be sure to take a shower to avoid bacteria sitting on your skin for a long period of time which can cause body acne.

Wear The Right Clothes- Try to wear loose, breathable clothes made out of natural fabrics on a daily basis, but especially when you are working out. Choosing the right workout clothes can prevent sweat from staying on your skin and allow it to dry quickly.

See A Dermatologist- If you do all these things and this routine isn’t preventing your body acne, go to a dermatologist who will provide a more vigorous routine. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics as well as a stronger body wash with higher concentrations of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Simple foot care tips for this monsoon

Monsoon brings relief from the blistering and scorching heat of the summer and revives and rejuvenates your spirits. Although it brings joy and happiness, they do bring lots of skin related problems as well. These bacterial infections can not only damage the skin but can also affect tissues and ligaments if left untreated. The deeper tissues of fascia and ligaments can get infected if your personal hygiene and sanitation is not up to the mark. So, you need to take special care of your feet in monsoon to guard against fungal infections and conditions such as Athlete’s feet.

Tips for foot care in monsoon

Avoid sweat – As feet sweat a lot during monsoon, closed footwear can harm them a lot. Avoid shoes that close in your feet. Slippers, waterproof sandals and clogs are preferable in this season. Keep your feet sweat free by applying talcum powder. The moisture in monsoon can affect you foot nails too. To enhance the effectiveness of talcum powder, mix it with camphor powder before applying on your feet. Do this always before wearing your shoes and after removing them.

Exfoliate – Use a foot scrubber or pumice stone to remove the dead skin from your feet regularly. The dead skin cells tend to harden your feet and cause cracks. If exfoliating the skin yourself seems burdensome, you can get a pedicure once a week. This will keep your feet clean and devoid of dead skin.

Keep your feet moisturized – Always use moisturiser on your feet after washing. Olive oil or almond oil can also be effective as moisturiser. Almond oil is a natural foot lotion which should be applied before sleeping.

Dry your footwear in sun – Your wet shoes, sandals or any other form of footwear should not be kept in shade for drying. Keeping them under the bed or in the shoe rack would breed a lot of bacteria, especially if they are wet. Dry the shoes out in sun instead as sunrays are most effective in killing bacteria and prevent foot infections.

Foot therapy – There are many choices available for you if you want to look after your feet well. Foot soaks, scrubs and healing creams are available aplenty. A foot soak is one that is added to warm water, after which its salt beads and fresh aqua scent helps to relax and cleanse your feet. Foot scrubs contain healing oils such as that of jojoba and sunflower along with vitamin E. They replenish the moisture lost and also make your footpad supple. If you have a taste for keeping even your toes pretty, get a foot scrub.

You can use the simple as well as exclusive foot care tips given here to make sure your foot is healthy, and looks good too throughout monsoon.

Five Top Makeup Tips From Upper Class Cabin Crew

Ever wondered how cabin crew manage to keep their full face of makeup smudge-free throughout a long-haul flight? While most passengers (Victoria Beckham not included) emerge from aeroplanes looking bleary-eyed, the staff must put their flawless appearance first, with hairspray and lipstick at the ready.

So it's no surprise that the air hostesses have a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to their beauty regimes. We asked Virgin Atlantic Grooming Training Manager (yes, such a job exists) Moreta Allgood for her top five makeup and skincare tips to practise before flying. Take a look below for jet-setting advice from an expert:

1.The night before the flight treat your skin to an invigorating exfoliation and soothing face mask. Place a rich hydrating face cream on, such as Dr Hauschka’s rose cream which hydrates skin and smells heavenly. Then be sure to have a good night’s sleep and let the skin breathe by keeping the window open, and turn off any air conditioning or central heating. This will ensure the skin is oxygenated, and prevent you looking puffy and dehydrated in the morning.

2. The morning of the trip, gently wash your face and moisturise. If you have time place an eye mask that has been cooled overnight around the eye – this will help wake up the eyes. After 10 minutes place a primer onto the skin, as this will work to
help your make-up last all day and ease any redness.

3. When it comes to foundation, our Upper Class cabin crew prefer mineral-based products such as the Bare Escentuals collection, which contains zinc to protect skin from the sun and gives a natural finish. Set the base layer with Mineral Veil (also from Bare Escentuals), which reduces the appearance of lines, absorbs oils and softens the complexion - it gives a wonderful, flawless finish so that you’ll arrive at your destination looking as fresh as when you boarded the plane.

4. Apply a bronzer and blusher to the cheeks to give you a healthy glow. Spending time in the air can dehydrate skin, so it’s important to maintain a youthful flushed look.

5. To ensure that lip colour holds, prepare your lips by applying a concealer as a light base and locking the lip area in with a natural lip liner. Our cabin crew adore bareMinerals Pretty Amazing Lipcolor in Upper Class Red, which re-creates the iconic 'Virgin Atlantic Red' and has been created with frequent fliers in mind. It includes micronised freshwater pearl powder which hydrates the lips, alleviating the effects of cabin air pressure, plus the comfortable and longwearing finish makes glamour last that bit longer - perfect for long-haul flights. Once you’ve applied the lip colour blot it with a tissue, then (here’s the trick!) keep the tissue on the mouth and place a powder brush over the tissue this will help the lipstick to set. You can then reapply.

How to care for your skin: tips from expert

Which are the most common skin problems in Armenia, who apply to doctors, how to take care of the skin especially in summer? Armenian News-NEWS.am talked about these questions with expert form Litte Innovative Medical Center Hasmik Mangasaryan.

According to Hasmik Mangasaryan, from the age of 15 people apply to doctors because of pigmentation problems. As Hasmik Mangasaryan mentioned, pigmentation problems in Armenia are connected with the burning sun.

Caring for one’s skin is an individual procedure. According to Hasmik Mangasaryan the most important thing is to keep the skin clean. Every evening after coming home everyone must wash face with special soaps. It is desirable to not put anything on the skin in the evenings if the skin is not problematic. In the morning the skin should again be cleaned and then after applying sun protection lotion it is safe to go out of the house.

According to her, it is possible to make different masks at home. Strawberries, cherries, plums and watermelon are good for oily skin and apricots are best for dry skin. These fruits should be applied by themselves.

How to keep your skin glowing during monsoon

After a hot and sweaty summer, the monsoon comes as a relief but the humid and damp weather takes a toll on the skin and eyes. Experts advise how small changes in the skin care routine during the season can keep the skin glowing and eyes fresh.

Monsoon brings humidity and it`s bad news for all type of skins:

Oily Skin

The skin type is mainly the result of genetically determined hormonal changes. To treat oily skin one needs to remove excess oil by cleansing it twice or thrice a day, but not more than that.

"Limit washing your face to two or three times a day as too much washing will stimulate your skin to produce more oil. Avoid heavy cleansing creams. Scrub your face on a regular basis. This will help unclog the pores and remove the layer of dead cells from your skin," cosmetic surgeon Anup Dhir told IANS.

It is advised to use warm water while washing face as it dissolves skin oil better than lukewarm or cold water.

Other than that, one also uses mud-pack. Homemade pack made with "Chane ka atta and raw milk" can help in keeping skin refreshing and glowing.

Dry Skin

Dryness is a sign of dehydration and lack of skin repairing vitamins. During monsoon the problem worsens. One requires cream based cleanser, says Dr. Geetika Mittal, medical director of the International Skin and Anti-Aging Centre (ISAAC).
"A moisturizer increases the water content of the outer layers of the skin and gives it a soft, moist look and it is always advised one with dry skin opt for alcohol free toner," said Mittal.

Also, apply glycerin and rose water mixture to keep skin soft.

Combination Skin

This type of skin is characterised with the T-portion as oily and the cheeks are usually normal or dry in condition. Since it combines both the oily and dry skin it should be treated as if it were two different types of skin, said Dhir.

"The dry area requires gentle cleansing and regular moisturizing. The oily part needs to be deeply cleansed and toned with regular scrubbing," Dhir told IANS.

Moonsoon also brings skin infections

Fungal and bacterial infections are common during rainy season. Moist and damp skin leads to these infections. Also, one can get rashes and ringworm and even skin gets discoloured.

Dhir advises keeping the body dry is the basic tip to tackle the infections.

"Switch to cotton clothes as they allow your body to breathe. Allow damp hair to dry before you tie them again. To circumvent allergies from mosquito bites, wear full-sleeved clothes and use a mosquito repellent cream and head for air-conditioned rooms. Bathe twice a day to keep the problems at bay," he added.

Eye Infection

With rains come puddles of dirty water and eye infections soar. But, with a bit of prevention, you could stay safe, says Mahipal Sachdev, chairman and medical director, centre for Sight group of Eye Hospitals.

"Close your eyes when you decide to get soaked in the rain as it screens off atmospheric pollutants. While the rain water is reasonably clean, but you need to be wary of the rain water if you stand under a tree or a building, as it can be contaminated with pollutants, which could increase eye infections," said Sachdev.

Emphasizing on hygienic practices, Sachdev advises how conjunctivitis and stye could be avoided.

"These infections are contagious and can be easily transmitted via towels, handkerchiefs, lenses, glasses and other articles handled during the course of daily activities. To avoid infection, you need to ensure that you do not share articles of personal use with anyone else," he said.

Eye infections result in redness of eyes and watery discharge. One should use an antibiotic eye drop to treat eye infections, but only after it has been prescribed by an ophthalmologist. Use of contact lenses should be avoided during any kind of infection in the eye.

Shine Control Tips | Summer Skin Care

Summer comes with a lot of perks, but at the same time, it brings a whole new set of challenges to deal with. Among the most common summer complaints when it comes to skin care there is excessive oiliness which tends to emerge at the worst possible times. Being prepared and minimizing damage are the best ways to deal with this problem. Here are a few ways to maintain the illusion of perfect skin without relying solely on blotting papers:

Try acne-fighting cleansers
Even if the days when you were battling acne are officially gone, if you're having regular shine issues, using a salicilic acid based cleanser can be a good idea. Don't go beyond 2% concentration though, as it might have opposite effects.

Switch up your night cream
You realized the need for lighter formula moisturizer the minute temperatures started soaring. But have you applied the same logic for your night cream? If you didn't, it's time to go lighter to see better results without much effort. Also, skip the entire nose area which gets enough moisture as it is.

Don't skimp on facials
Even if you don't necessarily feel like spending big bucks on spa visits, keeping the ritual of applying suitable homemade facials on a weekly basis should be an important concern. Choose adequate facials like clay based ones for a better result.

Eat right
It's not only the products you put on your skin that influence the degree of oiliness you experience. Spicy foods along with alcoholic beverages such as cocktails dilate blood vessels causing your skin to sweat more. Limit your consumption of these and instead fill up on a variety of fruits and veggies with high water content and save a few calories in the process.

Try mineral based sunblock
It might seem unintuitive but it appears that sunblock can actually help control shine and excessive oil production. Micronized zinc or titanium dioxide are the two helpful ingredients for this purpose. Denatured alcohol is another helpful ingredient which can keep the skin oil free. Of course, be sure not to overdo makeup in the summer for best results.

Tips to get glowing skin in monsoon

After a hot and sweaty summer, the monsoon comes as a relief but the humid and damp weather takes a toll on the skin and eyes. Experts advise how small changes in the skin care routine during the season can keep the skin glowing and eyes fresh.

Monsoon brings humidity and it's bad news for all type of skins:

Oily Skin:

The skin type is mainly the result of genetically determined hormonal changes. To treat oily skin one needs to remove excess oil by cleansing it twice or thrice a day, but not more than that.

"Limit washing your face to two or three times a day as too much washing will stimulate your skin to produce more oil. Avoid heavy cleansing creams. Scrub your face on a regular basis. This will help unclog the pores and remove the layer of dead cells from your skin," cosmetic surgeon Anup Dhir said.

The oily part needs to be deeply cleansed and toned with regular scrubbing," Dhir said.

With rains come puddles of dirty water and eye infections soar. But, with a bit of prevention, you could stay safe, says Mahipal Sachdev, chairman and medical director, centre for Sight group of Eye Hospitals.
